What Does Notarized Translation Mean?

A notarized translation is a document that legally certifies that a document or file has been translated by reliable and expert sworn translators in a manner that is identical to the original. If a translation is not notarized, it means that the reliability of the translation has not been legally proven.

Notarized translation and sworn translator-certified translation are different processes. If only a sworn translator’s certification is required for a document, the sworn translator’s signature and stamp are sufficient. However, if a notarized translation is required, the document must first be signed and stamped by a sworn translator, then notarized by the notary public affiliated with the sworn translator. However, if an apostille certification is required, the document must first be signed and stamped by a sworn translator. Then it must be notarized, followed by apostille procedures conducted by the governor’s office in provinces and the district governor’s office in districts.

Whether a person’s official document must be notarized or simply certified by a sworn translator depends on the institution to which the document will be submitted. Some institutions may require only a sworn translator’s certification for certain documents, while others may stipulate that the document must be notarized. However, in general, official institutions typically require the document to be notarized for validity purposes.

In which cases may a notarized document not be approved?

When translating original documents, notaries always want to see the original document. For example, if a transcript is translated from a photocopy and the original is not available, the notary will not be able to verify that the translation is accurate and will therefore not certify it.

If a document has been translated from one foreign language into another foreign language, in order for the notary to certify the document, it must first be translated into Turkish, the translation must be certified, and then the Turkish translation must be translated into the other foreign language before final certification can be granted.

How and on what basis are notary fees determined?

The number of pages, whether the text is printed on both sides of the page, the length of the text, the font size, the type of expressions used in the text, the amounts mentioned in the text, or the nature of the text determine the notary certification fees.
